Dunnock song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Dunnock, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

The song is a rapid, high-pitched, and rather thin warbling, often described as a 'tinkling' or 'jingling' sound. It is delivered from a prominent perch (e.g., top of a bush or tree) or from within cover. It is quite distinctive once learned, though not particularly loud or far-carrying.

Calls

Common calls include a sharp, high-pitched 'tseep' or 'tseet' contact call, and a thin, insistent 'sitt' or 'tiss' alarm call when disturbed.

When they vocalize

Males sing most frequently during the breeding season (February to July) to attract mates and defend territory. Calls are given year-round.
