The American Woodcock is smaller, has a shorter bill, and its crown stripes run lengthwise (longitudinal) rather than transversely. Its underparts are more uniformly buffy without the strong barring seen in the Eurasian Woodcock. The 'peent' call of the American Woodcock is also distinct from the Eurasian's roding calls.
